Miles has been sat upon &Rain. An order was issued in 1901 by which the General of the Army acted for the Secreterv of War in his absence. The other day the President rescinded that order and Secretary Root decided that in the absence of himself and his assistant the duties would devolve on the chief clerk of the War Office. Miles has become so used to being snubbed mat he doesn't mind it now. A Western Republican represen tative in Washington is quoted as ttjing that he knows Roosevelt is hankering to startle the country with a veto of some important measure which will give him a chance to spread himself. If he wants to fulminate a real first class "artier let him veto the, Philinnine hill when it reaches him. He could make a ten strike there. - Senator Beveridge, of Indiana, feels that hfi in a man nf AMtinv." Seats are going fast at Gerken's for the beautiful extravaganza to be given to-morrow night by lhe Daughters of the Confederacy in the Opera House, under the direction of Prof. Madison J. Lee. Rehearsals for the magnifi cent production are likewise progress ing satisfactorily and a brilliant suc cess seems certain. The play is heralded by the press and people in other cities as fully worthy of the large patronage it will undoubtedly be given here. The At lanta Journal, one of the foremost af ternoon journals in the South, says: 'An enthusiastic applause and a packed house greeted the play, 'Puss in Boots,' at the Grand Opera House last evening. It was the finest ama teur performance ever presented at the Grand. The horses and animals were unique, while the music and cos tumes were gorgeous. The electric snow storm wasweird and grand. It is to be hoped Mr. Lee will return in the Fall and repeat the beautiful play." Again the Greenville, H. U., JSews says: "The beautiful play, 'Puss in Boots,' for the benefit or the ureen- ville Female College was the most beautiful srjectacle that has ever been presented in the city. Twenty-eight horses, 1 landeau, 600 people were in the cast. The production was wit nessed bv 3.800 people, and pronounc ed the moat sublime, brilliant theat rical success ever attempted here." Between Baar and Blddie Taylor, Sled man, Morton, Qreen, Bell and Savaf e Elected Bellamy Endorsed The Judicial Tickets. The New Hanover Democratic pri. I maries yesterday passed off quietly and a very light vote was cast. The re turns last night were very slow In coming in, as thirteen tickets, some of them bearing the names of thirteen or fourteen candidates, had to be care. fully gone over and tallied. The re turns d:d not reach the Democratic Executive Committee last night from more than half the precincts, but the Stab presents this morning in 'another column.in tabulated f orm, returns from the entire county as nearly correct as was possible at midnight. Of the candidates,, Col. Jno. D. Tay lor, for Clerk of the Superior Court, and County Treasurer EL McL. Green, are elected without opposition ; Mor ton's majority over Eupie for the Leg islature will exceed 200 ; Stedman's ma jority over Williams is over 650. Bell is elected Coroner over Walton by over 400 majority; Savage's majority for Constable over Sheehan is about 90; while the race for Register of Deeds will likely have to be determined in a second primary to-morrow between Haar and Biddle. Haar led the ticket with 753, while Biddle received 730 and DeRosset received 46. As these figures are unofficial, a canvass may declare Haar elected, but the vote is close. Hon. Jno. D. For Asso ciate Justice, Walker led the ticket with 1,113; Connor, 858; Brown, 387; Lockhart, 33. Geo. H. Bellamy re ceived 943 votes for the State Senate and M. O. Guthrie 1.
